Remember when Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz declared in an inspired moment of tech Jedi mind-trickery that Yahoo was never really a search company? Well, apparently not everyone in Sunnydale got the memo:
“I fully anticipate that our front-end experience will evolve differently from Bing,” said Prabhakar Raghavan, senior vice president of Yahoo labs and search strategy, during a presentation to journalists at Yahoo’s headquarters in Sunnyvale, Calif. “We collaborate on the back end, but we are competitors on the front end.”
Mr. Raghavan made it clear that Yahoo, which will earn revenue in its partnership with Microsoft only from searches that originate on Yahoo, will continue to compete with Microsoft, and of course, with Google, for search users. The agreement with Microsoft, he said, “doesn’t detract from our attempt to deliver the best search experience on the Web.”
Eeeeyeah. That’s what I thought.
