This is from the same company that tried and failed to create a social network? How predictable. TechCrunch nails it in describing the rather futile efforts of Yahoo to get some social love:
When you are late to the game, trying to rename it doesn’t win you any points. Today, Yahoo announced that it is finally adding basic status updates to its Mail and Messenger products, which it is calling “status-casting.” In both Yahoo Mail and Messenger 10, you can update your status and all of your contacts who also use either of those two products can see your updates.
Status-casting. Yeah; that really rolls off the tongue, don’t you think? Thank goodness Zuckerberg held out against Yahoo’s 2006 attempt to purchase Facebook. Other great (and, ultimately, futile) attempts to hijack common tech vernacular include Creative’s redefining of podcast to mean “personal on-demand broadCast”, since people obviously didn’t have the Apple iPod in mind when using the term.
It’s reassuring to see that silliness will continue to pour out of Sunnyvale, despite Carol Bartz’s presence at the helm.
