As MySpace continues to lose the social networking battle to Facebook and Twitter, it has come up with a new mantra: we’re more a media destination than social network. Unlike Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz’ ridiculous assertion that Yahoo was “never really” a search engine, this re-defining of the competitive space may be legit for MySpace.

Its user experience was always predicated around shared musical preferences, and MySpaceTV has been a quiet success story for the company. (When’s the last time you went to Facebook to catch an episode of anything?) MySpace Music represents the largest investment in this transformation to date. It will be interesting to see how people refer to MySpace two years from now: as the former social networking giant, or as the new destination for online content.

“A number of studios are embracing this model of getting an advertiser to be the financier of the show, and then cutting the revenues with the distributor,” said Arash Amel, research director, digital media at Screen Digest. “And MySpace is probably better positioned for those deals than any of the other social networks or UGC services, because it has always aligned itself with entertainment brands”.
