The ease with which Carol Bartz rattles off such zingers should fill Yahoo shareholders (all two of you out there) with concern. Never a search company? OK, maybe– except for all those years from founding to present in which you’ve been a search company.
Ms. Bartz places Yahoo’s position in a rather different light. “We have never been a search company,” she said. “It is: ‘I am on Yahoo. I am going to do a search.’ ”
This is classic marketing strategy: get your ass kicked by an upstart rival, then re-define your competitive landscape to show how you were never really that interested in the space to begin with. We’ve seen MySpace do it in regards to Facebook, and now Yahoo is doing it with Google.
